Sedona Community Center Reaches Out

By Staff Writer (Sedona.biz)

The Sedona Community Center (SCC) is a special place for the greater Sedona community, offering many wonderful activities and classes for its members and non-members, such as cooking, dance, yoga and even an internet cafe!

But what sets the SCC apart from other community centers is its focus on elderly services.  Five days a week, up to ten SCC volunteers deliver hot, nutritious food to approximately 200 older adults in our community who are largely housebound or disabled.  That's 10,000 meals a year. And with the support of the Sedona Community Food Bank, every Friday SCC volunteers deliver a grocery bag full of food to these same adults to see them through the weekend.

But it doesn't end there.  The SCC also sponsors a Telecare program where a dozen housebound seniors (and growing) are called on a daily basis to provide reassurance that someone cares and is watching out.

For those older adults that are more mobile, the SCC operates the only handicapped equipped vans in Sedona that are available Monday - Friday to assist senior adults in getting to the store, bank, or doctor. And the SCC also offers a daily lunch in its dining cafe that serves approximately 8,500 meals a year to 300 older adults.

More about the SCC
The SCC is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that gained life in 1986 when the owners of the Harmony Hills Recreational Corporation donated a land gift to the organization.

Since 1992 the SCC has grown and been remodeled several times and now sports a large hall in the Tudor Room seating up to 85 people with a 13' projection theater, an outdoor salt water pool that is handicapped accessible, and a dining room and a commercial kitchen.

The SCC supports itself through membership dues that are tax deductible, government and private grants, and many hard working and dedicated volunteers.  Its facilities are also available for rent.

The SCC is open to all community members over the age of 21.  Annual membership dues are $45 for a single person, $80 for a couple and $20 for each additional family member.
