Sedona volunteers

by Alison Zelms, Assistant City Manager

SEDONA, AZ - Oct 17, 2008 - When someone asks the questions ‘what is Sedona?’ or, ‘what is Sedona about?’ or, ‘what makes Sedona special?’ an abundance of thoughts will probably come to mind.

There are some obvious things, like the beautiful red rocks or the historic presence as a filming location for Western movies. Perhaps someone would refer the inquirer to our Community Plan or to the City Vision Statement. Still others might say we are an active community and we care about our city.

On October 1st, the city recognized some of those active community members - the people who diligently and selflessly volunteer their time to city service. In the last year alone there have been multiple new committees and taskforces formed for a variety of issues. These include the Pedestrian Safety Committee, the Posse Grounds Operation Plan Taskforce, the Mayor’s Advisory Committees, and the Wastewater Effluent and Land Use Taskforce. We are also now enjoying the volunteer work of the Sedona Park Rangers. Sedona continues to have a very strong Police Volunteer group, who now count their membership in excess of the number of sworn paid officers in the Sedona Police Department.

One of the many things we have to be proud of in Sedona is a very active community and a great thank you goes out to those who are active in the way of volunteerism. Our city volunteers are owed many thanks for the time and effort they put forth that continues to make Sedona a beautiful place to live and visit. Several of our volunteers dedicate time to multiple committees and programs for the city, as well as other groups in town. Also, we extend a thank you to the other nonprofit organizations and their volunteers that have assisted with many projects throughout the years such as helping to draft the covered load ordinance, maintenance of the garden at the Uptown parking lot, and litter pick-up. In particular, city staff members thank our volunteers for the time and effort you put forth and for working so diligently with us toward the various goals and issues facing Sedona.

Of course, we want to ensure that the spirit of volunteerism continues as we expand this already extensive group of people to include new members. If you have been thinking about joining a commission or providing volunteer services but weren’t sure how to do so, we have included a list of openings that are current or upcoming on various commissions.

If you are wondering how you can get involved in a committee or commission, please contact the City Clerk’s Office for a list of openings at 282-3113.

If you would like to volunteer your time as a Park Ranger, contact the Parks and Recreation Department at 282-7098.

We recognize all our volunteers and the time and effort they devote to the city. When you see a neighbor who sits on a commission or who volunteers their time, whether at the city or in the many volunteer-led organizations in town, take a moment to stop and say thank you.
