Sedona schools get three phase make-over

Sedona, AZ - June 23, 2008 - In 2007, voters approved a $73.4 million bond issue for improvements to all Sedona-Oak Creek school district facilities, including Sedona Red Rock High School, West Sedona School, Big Park School and the Brewer Road administrative facility.

Construction is to occur in three phases over a 42-month period and has already commenced at the high school and West Sedona School.

The School District has formed a citizen oversight committee that has been meeting once per month since February.

The committee’s role is to review and comment on progress of the design and construction and be an interface between the community and the School District. Councilor Nancy Scagnelli and Community Development Director, John O’Brien, are members of the committee.

Although the City of Sedona does not have zoning jurisdiction of the proposed construction, School District officials have expressed their desire to work closely with the city regarding all aspects of the project.

Some of the project highlights at Sedona Red Rock High School include:

The football field was renovated this spring with new artificial field turf and a new track.
Six new tennis courts are being constructed this summer.
New parking areas near the football field are being constructed this summer.
Phase one is to include the construction of two classroom building additions totaling 15,500 square feet and a 9000 square foot auxiliary gymnasium for basketball, volleyball, wrestling, and cheerleading.
Phase two is to include the expansion of the performing arts center from 261 seats to 750 seats and will consist of 17,400 square feet of new building space.  Construction of the performing arts center is scheduled to begin in August of 2009 and be completed by August of 2010.
Energy efficiency improvements are proposed throughout the school.

Some of the project highlights at West Sedona School include:

A new bus driveway connecting to Carruth Drive and the relocation of the front parking lot to the northeast corner of the school property will be completed this summer.
Phase one is to include the demolition of the existing multi-purpose building and a classroom building, and the construction of a new 11,630 square foot multi-purpose building and a new 13,800 square foot classroom building.
Phase two is to include the demolition of a second classroom building and courtyard, and the construction of a new 12,250 square foot classroom building.
Phase three is to include interior remodeling of two buildings and a 1300 square foot addition to the existing library building.
Energy efficiency improvements are proposed throughout the school.
