SEDONA, AZ (November 26, 2009) - On November 23, 2009, City of
Sedona Chief of Police Joe Vernier submitted his retirement letter
stating that his last day of work will be January 15, 2010. He has
served as Chief since June 1999.
City Manager Tim Ernster stated, “This will be a great loss to the
Police Department but the good news is that Chief Vernier plans on
remaining in the community. While I have only been here for five months,
it has been a real pleasure for me to work with Chief Vernier. His 38
years of dedicated service to the Public Safety profession is a
testament to his integrity and commitment as a public servant.”
Chief Vernier in his letter wrote, “I would like to sincerely thank you
and City Council for the privilege of serving Sedona for the last ten
years. It has been an honor to be affiliated with the City and all of
its outstanding employees and volunteers. I will miss them all, but take
solace in the fact that they were all an important part of the success
Sedona has enjoyed over the years.”
Mayor Rod Adams said, “I have had the pleasure of serving on the City
Council for four of the ten years that Chief Vernier has served as Chief
of Police. Chief Vernier has not only been an outstanding leader of the
Sedona Police force, but he has also been a dedicated volunteer in our
community and a true gentleman to work with. I will particularly
remember his service in regards to substance abuse prevention and
education on MATForce and the Greater Sedona Substance Abuse Coalition.”
In anticipation of Chief Vernier’s retirement, City Manager Ernster has
offered the Interim Chief Position to Jim Driscoll, who is currently the
Chief Deputy for Coconino County. Mr. Driscoll will only serve as
Interim Chief until a new Chief is hired. It is anticipated that the
recruitment process will take approximately four months.
