SEDONA, AZ - June 29, 2008 - Red and white checkered tablecloths, barbecue ribs smoking on an open grill and, of course, old friends.

That was the scene at the 1st Old Sedona Gang Reunion and outdoor picnic at the Crick Ranch in Cornville on Saturday, June 28th.

Friends gathering at the outdoor picnic at the Crick Ranch in Cornville, AZ on June 28, 2008. Joanna Goldwater (l.) and Sandy Moriarty (r.)

Hosted by Debbie and Charlie Crick, the reunion brought together about 200 existing and former Sedona residents, some from as far as Utah and northern California.

Host Debbie Crick. Steve Ash (1950-2008) cooked up some of the best BBQ ribs many in attendance said they ever ate.

Invitations travelled solely by word of mouth, and the event had been in the planning stages since long time resident Charlie Johnson, a Qwest employee, passed away over a year ago.

The Retros played old favorites on a converted stage in the red barn. Sandy Moriarty (l.) and Shirley McNulty (1950-2008)

Each guest sported a tag with their name and the years they (have) lived in Sedona.

The oldest resident was Don Newton, raised in Sedona since 1937.  Many in attendance came to Sedona in the 1970s.

As the evening descended over the ranch, the air cooled and the dark, starry sky emerged.  Torches and lanterns were lit and the band, the Retros, set up in the barn, played old favorites while friends swayed at their tables, and couples spun on the outdoor dance floor.

Once fed and watered, folks reminisced about the way Sedona used to be:  no traffic lights, just a stop sign at the "Y", ice skating at Indian Gardens, and gathering at the Oak Creek Tavern.

The event was a reminder of the true meaning of community, when friends and family came together to enjoy and support one another.

Maybe it's not too late.
