Sept 10, 2009 Sedona flooding causes wide devastation

SEDONA, AZ (September 10, 2009) - Heavy monsoon rain and pea-sized hail in Sedona that began at around lunchtime today caused wide devastation and mud slides. At Tlaquepaque, heavy flooding lifted cars and moved them, toppling some over walls, into trees, and into other cars and structures.  First floor shops at Tlaquepaque were reported to be flooded.  A 30-plus year resident says she has never experienced flooding in Sedona this devastating.

Metal dumpsters were also reported to have been floated by the floods.  Below is a series of photos taken by and courtesy of Christopher Fox Graham.

#1 My Husband and I have visited the beautiful town of Sedona, whilst visiting my aunt in Old Cottonwood.
We have just seen the devastation of the recent flooding, we would just like to say how sorry we are for everybody who has had this awful experience.

We live in England near the Coast and local flooding is something that often happens near to us and are aware of how traumatic it can be for everyone.

We hope that when all the hard work of clearing the devistation everything will be alright again.

Regards

Dawn and Jerry Houghton

#2 My son and I visited my sister and her family in Phoenix this past April and we drove up to the Grand Canyon and then to Sedona. I remember telling my sister that, while the Grand Canyon is a master piece and too awesome to describe in words or even in pictures, I would visit Sedona again before the Grand Canyon because of the beauty that surrounds you no matter where you drive there! I am so saddened to see the pictures of the devastation, and will pray for all affected by this. Colette DeLeo, North Carolina
