Pepsi created the
Refresh Everything Online Grant Program in January 2010 with money
the company used to spend on Super Bowl commercials.
Pepsi donates over $1.33 million dollars every month to fund great ideas presented by individuals and communities
throughout the U.S.
Submitting the application to get into the running is
highly competitive. The Sedona
Arts Center was successful in getting their application accepted for
voting during the month of August.
This critical funding for the Sedona Arts Center will be
used to "refresh" the old Barn Building at the Art Center's campus.
The building was originally the Jordan Apple and Peach Packing
Barn and was built around 1930.
Inspired by the beauty of
Sedona, Egyptian sculptor-Nassan Gobran and a group of local visionaries
including Max Ernst-recognized the need for a place where artists could
work, teach, and learn together. In
1958, they established the first Sedona arts group and purchased the
Barn which quickly became the community's creative and social hub.
The Art Barn needs major repairs, including a new roof, re-siding,
installation of a sprinkler system, replacement of windows and interior
improvements.
Watch the "Save the Art Barn" YouTube video:
If the Arts Center is successful in winning the Pepsi Challenge, the
improvements can be made and this special building can be brought back
to life for the more than 58,500 students served by the Arts Center each
year.
The Arts Center is Northern Arizona's oldest not-for-profit organization
and offers arts and educational programs to people of all ages and walks
of life. Educational
opportunities include events such as the Plein Air Festival and 1st
Friday Gallery Tour. A vital
part of the Verde Valley economy, the Arts Center galleries sell the
largest selection of work by local artists.
And tourists and visitors attracted by the Arts Center spend over
$600,000 annually in Sedona.
