Discuss the privatization of water in Prescott on Feb 9

Sedona, AZ - Economist John Danforth will discuss the pros and cons of privatizing water and take questions from the audience when the Citizens Water Advocacy Group meets on Saturday, February 9 from 10 AM to noon at the Granite Peak Unitarian Universalist Congregation, 882 Sunset in Prescott (two blocks behind True Value).

The privatization and commodification of water has become a local issue.

On May 11, 2007, Chino Valley announced plans for the Chino Grande pipeline, a “public-private project developed from a unique collaboration between the Town of Chino Valley and Chino Grande LLC, owner of the Chino Grande Ranch in northern Yavapai County.” On October 30, 2007 Prescott Valley auctioned 2,724 acre-feet of effluent to a New York-based investment group called Water Property Investors, LLC for more than $67 million. At their October 23, 2007 meeting, the Prescott City Council heard a presentation from Trevor Hill of Global Water Resources, LLC, who proposed a public/private partnership for delivery of water from the Big Chino Pipeline.

John Danforth is CWAG treasurer. He has a Ph.D. in economics from Northwestern University and has served as Senior Vice President and Director of Research at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis and as Associate Economist of the Federal Open Market Committee. He is now Principal of his own firm, Danforth & Company, Consulting Economists.
