Sirens read in Sedona on Jan 23rd

Sedona, AZ - Sirens' Poetry: Powerful Women Speak showcase has gathered a dynamic group of female poets with many different stylistic voices and life experiences for the NORAZ poetry show on January 23rd at 6PM at Well Red Coyote to benefit charity Verde Valley Women's Sanctuary.

Captivating local poets were chosen to represent the female voice from newcomer, high school senior Jessica Guadarrama to Senior Poet Laureate Rochelle Brener.

Host, artist and poet, Jen Valencia has pulled together some of Sedona's much loved women poets to showcase the immense talent the area has to offer. Valencia says she moved to Sedona to find her artistic voice and she has found it among the wealth of inspiration from local creators.

Michelle Peterson has been using the pen as her sword since age fourteen and states that, "True power is in vulnerability, the ability to own, and express one's deepest rhythms; poetry, for me, is that outlet."

Mary Heyborne is an award winning professional potter as well as a poet. Mary reaffirmed her belief that life and poetry are expanded when shared by founding Poets Corner at Sedona Arts Center.

Local artist Rose Moon fell in love with poetry in high school, but her first love was art and photography. Years later after attending a creative writing class and then hearing the Slam poets of Noraz she was inspired to write and perform again.

Karyl Goldsmith works at her dream job teaching for over 24 years, now as Senior Lit Instructor at Red Rock High. Karyl has published many poems in various places, but her excitement comes from seeing her students creativity blossom.

A full-time award-winning designer and editor of books, Carol Haralson sees interdependency of words and images. Her poetry likewise reflects the subtle yet often invisible relationship between things.

High school senior Jessica Guadarrama is a bilingual, first-generation Mexican American. She started writing in 8th grade, but she discovered slam poetry in 9th grade due to a NORAZ slam at her school and her soul has been captured ever since.

Angels Without Wings Senior Poet Laureate of Arizona Rochelle Brener started publishing work at age twelve, and poetry editor by seventeen. She's been a poet, editor and publisher, and now a freelance journalist, editor and poetry coach.

There is no charge for the show, however, if anyone would like to make a donation to the Verde Valley Women's Sanctuary it will be greatly appreciated.
