July 5th in Jerome – First Saturday Art Walk a Celebration
Jerome, AZ - June 16, 2008 - First Saturday Art Walk in Jerome falls on a holiday weekend this
year with the promise of great art, galleries filled with artists
and patrons, good food and music all over town.
From The Artist
Studios in The Old Jerome High School to StahlKraft on the upper
level by The Surgeon’s House, everyone is ready for a celebration.
Stroll the winding streets, have dinner and maybe even spend the
night. Cooler mountain temperatures make for a pleasant summer
night, even in July.
Hembleben Gallery, Michael McDonald, Dawn Sutherland, Vicki Day and
Seeds, Darryl Day, Robin Anderson and Margo Mandette will all be on
hand at open studios in The Old Jerome High School with incredible
new work.
Take the free shuttle up the hill for something different at Gallery
527. Gallery 527 will open its first themed show, titled “The Stain
of Politics.” Painters Libby MacKinney and Ninfa will be showing
canvases that express their concern with the state of the world.
Come in for the usual great party mixed in with some good
old-fashioned controversy.
Carey Slade, Northern Arizona’s answer to Janis Joplin, will be
entertaining.
The Jerome Artist Cooperative Gallery will feature its annual Summer
Membership Show, aptly called Natural Beauty through July. Join the
artists for food, drink, live music and the chance to see how the 33
local painters and crafts-people incorporate the beauty of the
natural wonders that surround them into their own uniquely personal
artistic journey.
On the evening of Jerome's July 5th Art Walk, Pura Vida Gallery will
debut a collection of sculptural and functional ceramic pieces by
local artist Brandi Lee Cooper. Brandi's organic and contemporary
forms are influenced by her Arizona heritage, her background in
biology and her passion for conservation. From old Jerome glass to
egg cartons, discarded items are given new life within her ceramic
works of art.
The Pura Vida Gallery invites everyone for a fine evening of
ceramic art, live music by Dave Rentz and a fabulous champagne and
chocolate reception on the evening of the Jerome Art Walk. Brandi
will be on hand from 5-8pm to discuss her work. Pura Vida Gallery is
located at 501 School Street in Jerome, just three doors down from
the Red Rooster Cafe. For more information, contact the gallery at
928-634-0937.
Curt Pfeffer, oldest jeweler in the world, with partner Sharon
Watson, has been running Aurum as a showcase for local work of high
caliber, for 24 years. Aurum has been part of the towns’ evolution,
from storied ghost town to the art space it is today. Come see the
expressions of the many who have put Jerome on the map as an art
destination. Show casing this month a fresh collection from Lindsey
Livingston and colorful shibuichi rings from Douglas Downer.
The Cody DeLong Studio is now open on the second level, downstairs
in the Jerome Gallery at 240 Hull St. Cody will be painting or
sculpting in his studio during Art Walk. Come in and see what's wet
on the easel. Please visit
www.codydelong.com.
In July, the Spirit Art Gallery will be featuring T.K. Ryn. T.K. has
desired to interpret the world around her, for as long as she can
remember. Visually, she would take apart facial features,
landscapes, etc., and then put them back together, while studying
the interlocking shapes. T.K. has formally studied sculpture, art
and psychology before moving on to jewelry-making, ceramics, and
eventually printmaking, where she feels that she has come home in
her artistic wanderings. Printmaking, which encompasses etching,
lithographs, collagraphs, serigraphs, monoprints and monotypes,
allows her to employ drawing, painting and design.
Presently, T.K. is also creating jewelry, purses and scarves, and
painting and incorporating digital images into 2- and 3-dimensional
works of art. Entertainment will be provided by local musician and
artist, Doug Downer. Doug, who has been playing in this area for
over 20 years, includes blue grass and old favorites in his
repertoire.
Jerome artist Joanna Pregon has opened The Dreamscape Gallery at 419
Hull Avenue in Jerome, showcasing her own paintings as well as
sculptural and wearable art of fellow Jerome artists. Pregon’s
paintings integrate curvilinear shapes reminiscent of seashells,
flowers and the moon to the feminine face and form. Smooth
applications of oil paint on canvas, a strong line and Joanna’s
extra fine brushstrokes are characteristic of her unique style.
Finding inspiration in nature, Pregon uses earth tones, sensual
lines and balanced composition to create a dreamy depiction of her
inner world. Her paintings are windows into her subconscious that
begin with a sketch that reflects a deep-rooted emotional response
to the world around her. Drawing allows Pregon to quickly capture an
image that is later explored and exposed on canvas. Using colors of
nature and multiple thin layers of oil paint, she slips from reality
into a space where organic shapes unfold in a bouquet of fluid
motion. Please visit Joanna at The Dreamscape Gallery where her work
engages the imagination and sparks recognition within the viewer and
their subconscious. The Dreamscape Gallery is located below the Flat
Iron Café.
New owners of American Landscape Gallery, Eric and Tracy Kee will
continue to sell fine art Southwestern photography taken by Tom
Narwid, while incorporating original Navajo art. The Navajo art
ranges from traditional pen/ink drawings to red aromatic cedar
Native American flutes. Eric will be demonstrating traditional
pieces on the flutes he designs and makes.
