Sedona, AZ - When most people consider
how they can reduce their impact on global warming,
they
think of driving less, getting a more fuel
efficient car or hybrid, or recycling.
These are all good ways to reduce our impact on
global warming, but there are simpler, more
affordable ways; and you
can start today.
At GreenSedona.org we
have found that by switching
to natural cleaners, natural beauty products,
natural pesticides/herbicides, and low VOC
paints we can cut global warming in half.
This
is a pretty bold statement which has been
verified by California scientists. In an article
written by Gary Polakovic in the LA Times it
states that "Ordinary household products such as
cleansers, cosmetics and paints are now the Los
Angeles region's second-leading source of air
pollution, after auto tailpipe emissions, air
quality officials say." He goes on to say
that by 2020 these products will be the first
leading source of air pollution causing global
warming.

So what can we do to make a major difference?
One thing anyone can do is to avoid using anything
that contains Volatile Organic Compounds.
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA) website, "Volatile organic compounds (VOCs)
are emitted as gases from certain solids or liquids.
VOCs include a variety of chemicals, some of which
may have short-and long-term adverse health
effects." (see
http://www.epa.gov/iaq/voc.html). VOCs are sometimes 10 times higher indoors than
outdoors causing serious indoor air pollution.
Avoiding VOCs is not only good for slowing
global warming but it's also good for avoiding
cancer and other diseases.
Much of the leading research has linked VOCs to
cancer. Presently one in three people have
cancer. That's 2 billion people, unheard of
before the start of the chemical industry. Here is a short
list of products to avoid: perfume, fragranced
products, synthetic cleaning products, synthetic
makeup, hair dye, synthetic shampoos and soaps,
paints with VOCs, air fresheners and odor
removers, furniture, floor, and metal polishes,
glass cleaners, inks, oven cleaner, dry cleaned
clothing, pesticides, herbicides, and spot
removers. These products end up in our body when
we use them and many aren't metabolized, but
stored in our fat cells. Natural products break
down much easier and are metabolized when they
enter our bodies.
There are many natural solutions to these
products including essential oils for fragrance,
fragrance and dye free detergents, vinegar for
household cleaning and window washing, hydrogen
peroxide as a sanitizer, lemon juice as a
degreaser, natural soaps, shampoos, lotions that
have minimal or no VOCs, furniture polish (10
drops lemon oil, 2 tablespoons lemon juice, a
few drops olive oil or jojoba), paints with no VOCs (sold at Home Depot), clove or vinegar
based natural herbicides (straight vinegar kills
most weeds), Diatomaceous Earth as a natural
pesticide, use a natural dry cleaner (in most
major cities), and natural spot removers. You
can make your own products or most can be found
at a health food store near you.
By switching your habits you will not only
protect your health and your family's health,
but will protect the water and air from being
contaminated, slow global warming and cut cancer
in half. So start today and make it a process to
change your household into a safe, and healthy
environment. You may even start to notice those
headaches, rashes, fatigue, and other symptoms
you have may disappear. Go to
