Century Plant (Sedona.biz)

The Century Plant: An Unexpected Treasure

By Staff Writer

(Sedona, Arizona) - My friend and I were strolling down our driveway one evening after dinner.  “Oh, look!” she said and pointed, “You have a Century Plant!”  As a new resident of Sedona and the desert, I was embarrassed not to have noticed the giant 12-14 foot stalk protruding from an Agave, or Century Plant, right at the edge of my driveway.  “Enjoy it,” Nancy advised, “It completely dies after it blooms.”

Wanting to learn more about desert gardening, I decided that this was a good opportunity to investigate this beautiful and unique plant.

The Century Plant prefers dry, rocky desert slopes making Arizona a perfect environment for them.  It takes eight to twenty-five years for this plant to produce its only flowering stalk, which is a signature of the plant's strength and endurance.  That wide flowering window makes it a mystery when the stalk will appear and bloom.

The Century Plant has a tall, thin stalk from 10 to 14 feet high that grows from a thick rosette of gray-green leaves. The spatula shaped leaves are 10 to 18 inches long with long, sharp, spines.   The stalk features yellowish flowers and blooms June through August.  The stalk itself can be up to 4 inches thick in diameter. So much energy is expended in quickly creating this once in a lifetime bloom that the plant, exhausted, completely dies off after blooming. However, new plants already growing on the root system replace the old one.

The Century Plant flowers only once (Sedona.biz).

The Century Plant apparently provided Native Americans with a source of soap, food, fiber, medicine and weapons.  The Mexicans make an alcoholic beverage, Pulque, from the juice that feeds the emerging stalk.

Some people today believe that the essence of Century Plant has healing powers, derived from the plant’s endurance, strength, and fortitude. They claim its essence helps people stay focused, confident, and sustain a positive mental outlook.

For me the Century Plant teaches a lesson—that sometimes after years of steady, quiet concentration, something beautiful can emerge overnight, like magic, and leave an imprint on everything it touches.
