Sedona Teen Named Boys & Girls Club Youth of the Year

Boys & Girls Clubs of America to Celebrate 60 Years of "Youth of the Year" Winners

(Sedona, Arizona) - (April 9, 2007) – Tina McDonald is a true example of an extraordinary young woman. At age 15, she has just been selected as the Youth of the Year for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Northern Arizona (BGCNA). McDonald is among hundreds of local youths of the year across the country who join Boys & Girls Clubs of America in celebrating A Legacy of Hope and Opportunity during the 60th anniversary of the Youth of the Year program.

Being named Youth of the Year is the highest honor a Boys & Girls Club member can receive. The title recognizes outstanding contributions to a member’s family, school, community and the Boys & Girls Club. This program was founded 60 years ago through the generosity of the Reader’s Digest Foundation.

“The Reader’s Digest Foundation has been the proud sponsor of the Youth of the Year program since 1947,” said Susan Fraysse Russ, executive director, Reader’s Digest Foundation. “For 60 years, we have had the great honor of saluting amazing teens, like McDonald, for their dedication to their families, Club and community, and helping them achieve their academic and career goals.”

McDonald is a freshman at Sedona Red Rock High School, and has been a member of the Teen Center for 3 years. Through her Club membership she has spent time volunteering with BGCNA’s summer camps. She is a standout in dance, where her team has placed 1st in competitions. She was also a participant of “Builder’s Club” where she was involved with other various community service projects.

Her favorite things at the Club include hanging out with friends, and helping out staff. Tina credits the Club with helping shape her moral character and making her the person she is today.

“The Boys & Girls Club means the world to me. This Club has changed my life. The Club gives me something to do and keeps me out of trouble. I don’t know where I’d be without it,” McDonald said. After high school Tina plans to pursue a degree in criminology at Arizona State University.  McDonald will compete against other Boys & Girls Club members for the Arizona Youth of the Year title and a $1,000 scholarship, in Phoenix, April 16. If McDonald wins at the state level, then she will compete for the title of Pacific Regional Youth of the Year and a $10,000 scholarship.

The five regional winners will travel to Washington, D.C., in September 2007 to compete for the title of BGCA’s National Youth of the Year. The National Youth of the Year receives an additional $15,000 college scholarship and is installed by the President in an Oval Office ceremony.
