Love is in the Air in Sedona
By R. Butterworth |
Sedona.biz
(Sedona, Arizona) -I was
beginning to think that romance was a
thing of the past, especially with the younger generation. Young
folks always seem to be in such a big a hurry. They don't
seem to have the time to be truly romantic. Recently
I learned just how wrong I was.
I work part time for Arizona Helicopter Adventures, a
helicopter tour company operating out of the Sedona Airport,
specializing in local tours around the red rocks and into Secret
and Boynton canyons.
Checking the schedule book one Saturday
morning I saw a note next to the name of someone taking a Sunday
morning tour. He was requesting that a long stemmed red rose be secreted
on board where he alone could find it. In fact, he called to
make sure we had the message and would take care of it. I
imagined he was going to propose.

Sunday dawned bright and beautiful and my co-worker, Ed Johnson,
arrived with the rose, which we placed delicately in a bag and hid aboard.
An attractive young couple in their late twenties arrived at the
appointed tour time. Ed gave the young man the high sign that
the rose was there and I escorted them out to the helicopter,
loaded them on board, and sent them on their way.
Arizona Helicopter's Chief
Pilot Don Swain made the flight that day. Don is a retired Navy
Commander with over 8000 flight hours, and during the week
functions as a Scottsdale Police Officer in the training
division. You'd think he's seen it all, right? Not
this time.
When the tour
was over, I helped the couple deplane, noticing the young lady held
the rose and a greeting card in one hand, but I didn't see an
engagement
ring on her left hand. Nonetheless, she wore a wide smile on her face
and, as he got out, she gave her boyfriend a quick hug and a
kiss.
“What gives?" I thought. "Didn't he pop the
question?” Consumed with
curiosity and unable to contain myself, I turned to the young
lady and asked: “What’s with the rose?” “It’s
like this” she said smiling. “Just before Christmas he gave me a rose
saying that when I had received a dozen we would become engaged. After that, he planned various outings, trips or just dinner.
Sometimes he gave me a rose, sometimes not. I never knew what
the plans were or when. They were always impromptu. But, so far, this tour is the most unique.”
As she
savored the lush fragrance of the rose she said, “This is rose
number eleven.”
With
that her boyfriend gave me a wink and a smile as hand in hand they walked
away from the helicopter for the ride back to the terminal.
"How about that?" I thought with a
grin. "Love is
quite literally, in the air."
