89A Turn Back Study: The survey results are in

Survey respondents support a maintenance study, but not a study to determine improvement costs.

by Paul Chevalier & Carl Jackson

SEDONA, AZ (June 29, 2010) -
Last week Sedonabiz conducted  an online survey, as part of an article by Paul Chevalier, asking if Sedona should study the costs associated with maintenance and/or improvements to the West Sedona portion of 89A.  The reason for these studies is because ADOT has informed our City Council that, unless Sedona agrees to a turn back of the West Sedona portion of 89A, it intends to put continuous lighting there and bids will go out in January, 2011. Sedona City Council and Staff, making a difference

by Sedona Mayor Rob Adams

SEDONA, AZ (July 28, 2010)- One of the things that I like most about my job as Mayor is having the opportunity to work with other council members, city staff and citizens to make a difference in our community. It is one of the most fulfilling experiences that I have ever had. That being said, perhaps you can imagine my disappointment when a neighbor recently complained, "nothing is ever accomplished in this town". For obvious reasons, I take this personally and have devoted this article to giving a brief update on a few of the accomplishments that have occurred during my term as Mayor. [MORE]

Who is responsible for morality?

by Melvyn Copen

SEDONA, AZ (July 26, 2009) - In a recent decision, a federal appeals court weakened the ability of the Federal Communications Commission to police the airwaves for foul language. Although the 1978 Supreme Court decision affirming the FCC's authority to do so still applies, the recent decision, if unappealed, will leave the FCC with little enforcement power to deal with broadcasters who allow expletives to grace their content.[MORE]

[Please complete the short, 2 question survey at the end of this article. We will publish the results next week.]

by Paul Chevalier

SEDONA, AZ (July 23, 2009) - One of the issues currently generating debate in our city is a turn back study for West Sedona's highway 89A. People are divided over whether our city should 'do a study' of the costs associated with the city taking back responsibility for the maintenance and improvement of the West Sedona's  part of 89A from ADOT.  This turn back study would cover  the 2+ miles of highway 89A, that runs through West Sedona.[MORE]

National Scenic Area, a Mayor's perspective

by Sedona Mayor Rob Adams

SEDONA, AZ (July 15, 2010)- The time has finally come to put one of the most controversial issues in Sedona's history to rest. Our nation's lawmakers are debating legislation that would establish a National Scenic Area Designation for the greater Sedona area. The reason to support this legislation is simple; to permanently protect the Forest Service lands that surround us from land trades for the purpose of private development. The passion, which has driven many of us to make this Designation a reality, can be expressed in a diversity of ways. I would like to take this opportunity to share my story. [MORE]

Supporting our local businesses - are we doing enough?

By Beverly K. Copen

SEDONA, AZ (July 15, 2010) - When events are planned in the Village, dedicated community leaders and volunteers spend countless hours making them become reality.  Events, such as the Magical Journeys and Sedona Village Business Association's Moon Walks, are designed for residents of the extended community - the Village, Sedona and the Verde Valley - and for visitors.  It is important to recognize that these types of events enhance and benefit our community.  The volunteers usually turn to the business owners and merchants to "help" support and participate in the events, asking that they provide products, in-kind services or cash.  In most cases, the activities are of benefit to all - expanding cultural alternatives for those who participate while strengthening the Village economy.
